7 April The Monday in the Fifth Week of Lent
(Rev Jacob Law Hope Methodist Church)
Scripture - Psalm 126:1-6
1 When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream.
2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
“The LORD has done great things for them.”
3 The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad.
4 Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negeb!
5 Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! 6 He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.
Reflections on the Scripture
Think of a man who was hungry. He didn’t have enough to eat, and his family and children were crying in hunger. Yet this man had to take the grain from his children’s mouths and show it to the ground. As he put the gains in the ground and watered them with tears, what was his prayer? “Have mercy, and let us live.”
Israel suffered the suppression and mockery of the nations. Psalm 44 says when people see them, they “shake their heads at us.” They were God’s chosen people, now people saw them and shook their heads. What was Israel’s dream of? “Restore our fortunes, Lord, like streams in the Negev.”
This is a song of tears and a song of joy.
God the Father heard his people’s cry and sent his Son to them. People shook their heads when they saw the crucifixion. One day, people will say, “The LORD has done great things for them.”
Prayer
Dear Father, You see our tears and hear our cries. When we sow in sorrow, You promise a harvest of joy. Have mercy on us, O God, and restore us like streams in the desert. You never abandon your children, You will not forsake us. We look to Christ, who bore our shame and suffering, and trust in Your faithfulness. Father, bring fast the final days, turn our mourning into dancing, let us rejoice in Your great harvest, grant us the sheaves at last. Father, make the whole earth say “The LORD has done great things.” In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application
In this season of Lent, you can learn to:
• Persevere in Faith – In great difficulties and in distress, trust that God will bring restoration in His time.
• Sow in Tears, Reap in Joy – Keep praying, serving, and never stop proclaiming the gospel, even through hardship. You will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves.
• Look to Jesus — Jesus endured shame and suffering, but God exalted Him. Follow Him with endurance.
• Expect the Second Coming of Christ – It doesn’t matter whether people approve or disapprove of us, shame or honour us today. Our future is secured.
