22. 26 March The Wednesday in the Third Week of Lent
(Rev Samuel Chiu Redeemer Methodist Church)
Scripture: I Corinthians 10:1–13
10 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
6 Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up toplay.” 8 We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9 We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. 12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has
overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
Reflections on the Scripture
In the Old Testament, the Israelites, under Moses' leadership, crossed the Red Sea and journeyed through the wilderness, guided by the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. The apostle Paul explains that these actions symbolized how the Israelites were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. These events foreshadowed the future redemption of the New Testament believers, who, through the precious blood of Jesus, are baptized into Christ.
Paul further explains that the rock in the wilderness was a representation of Christ. Though the Israelites in the Old Testament belonged to Moses under the covenant God made with him and the people, and though they all ate the manna from heaven and drank the water that flowed from the rock Moses struck, they still sinned against God. Their rebellion provoked God's anger, and as a result, they perished in the wilderness, never entering the promised land of Canaan.
Paul warns us not to crave evil things, not to worship idols, not to commit sexual immorality, not to test God, and not to grumble. Every act of sin was met with God's judgment, serving as a warning for us today. We must not assume that, just because we are justified by faith, we can take God's grace for granted. If we believe that our salvation is secure and that we are guaranteed entry into heaven, yet we stop pursuing the Lord and become complacent, we fall into danger.
The world, the devil, and the desires of the flesh constantly tempt us. But God is faithful—He will provide a way out so that we can endure temptation, avoid sin, and walk in victory.
Prayer
O Lord, our Savior, You have made a covenant with us to deliver us, setting us free from the bondage of sin and death. We have been saved by Your grace, yet we often rebel against Your will, shutting our ears to Your admonition.
We frequently test You, covet evil things, and set up both visible and invisible idols in our hearts. Our thoughts are impure, and we deceive ourselves into thinking that because we believe in You, we can continue sinning and testing You. We grumble and are filled with dissatisfaction toward Your sovereign plans.
Lord, we ask You to grant us hearts that rely on You wholeheartedly. By Your grace, may we overcome temptation and remain steadfast in a holy life. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen!
Application
Looking back on your life experiences, are there people, events, or situations that made you feel that God was unfair to you? Have there been moments when you felt wronged and became dissatisfied, leading to complaints in your heart?
Write these experiences down and confess them before God. Trust that His guidance is never mistaken. Believe that His leading works for the good of those who love Him and that His purposes are beyond our understanding, yet always good.
For every person, event, or circumstance that has caused you to complain, offer thanksgiving and praise to the Lord. Because of His goodness, we can rely on His grace to continually grow, reflect the beauty of Christ, and bring blessings to those who love Him.
